Have Your Cake and Eat It Too in Tega Cay, South Carolina
How often have you thought you’d found the perfect location for your family, only to realize that there was something negative that almost eclipsed the positive aspects? It’s a sad reality all too often. Tega Cay is different. Here, you can have your cake and eat it, too. This master planned city sits right on the shores of Lake Wylie, and delivers all the benefits of rural living, with proximity to the big city. What should you know about Tega Cay?
In the Beginning
While many of the cities in the surrounding area have a history that reaches back to the 1800s or even further, Tega Cay is relatively new. It was created in 1970 when the Ervin Company began construction on 1,600 acres of land surrounding Lake Wylie. The name “Tega Cay” is Polynesian, and means beautiful peninsula. It was chosen deliberately, and the Polynesian theme was carried throughout the development, from the clubhouse to the swimming pools to the names of the very streets.
What started out as a master planned community changed in the early 1980s. The development company building Tega Cay went bankrupt, and in order to save their beloved area, the community came together and incorporated as a city. Today, it’s governed by a mayor and four council members, each of whom serve for two years at a time.
Tega Cay combines elements of both a master planned subdivision and a city, with a significant number of municipal facilities. The massive clubhouse is one such facility, and it’s shared by the entire community. There are several swimming pools, as well as a stunning golf course and tennis courts. Of course, the water is one of the major attractions here, and it surrounds Tega Cay on three sides (it’s a peninsula, after all). With miles of shoreline, several beaches, and easy access to the water of Lake Wylie, there’s simply no better place to live in the greater Charlotte area.
A closer look at the city’s facilities include several miles of walking trails, and three parks for sports (soccer and baseball). There are four waterfront parks, as well as a new one in the works. Three boat launching areas give residents access to the lake, and there’s a large marina for bigger boats. Four interior parks and playgrounds give kids a chance to play and adults to enjoy some non-aquatic fun, and the beach and swim center is simply amazing. Of course, the 27-hole golf course is one of the prime attractions for the area, and the clubhouse is both a gathering place and watering hole for locals.
Just north of Tega Cay, you’ll find Charlotte, Gastonia and all that there is to see and do in the area. Rock Hill isn’t far away, and a short drive southward will take you to Columbia and eventually the state line with Georgia. Convenient, beautiful and chock-full of things to do, Tega Cay is an incredible place to live.
