Lake Wylie: Waterfront Living in South Carolina

There’s no end to the natural beauty of South Carolina, from the beaches of the Atlantic Ocean to the mountains in the western part of the state. While Lake Wylie might be located at the very north, it’s just as beautiful as the rest of the state. And whether you call it Lake Wylie or Clover, there’s plenty to see, do and enjoy here.
While Lake Wylie/Clover might not be an actual town in its own right (it’s technically a “census designated place”), it’s part of the larger Bethel Township that lies right on the shores of the Lake Wylie Reservoir. As you might expect, watersports are a big part of local activities during the warmer months of the year, but there’s more to enjoy here than swimming and boating.
The community of Lake Wylie/Clover is located on a peninsula that juts out into the reservoir that gives the area its name. Interestingly, remapping of the North Carolina/South Carolina state line using GPS technology has shifted the boundary farther south. Several properties that were once part of Lake Wylie, South Carolina, are actually now part of South Point, North Carolina.
Buster Boyd Bridge
If you’ll be traveling north or south, you’ll find yourself crossing the Buster Boyd Bridge. The first bridge was constructed in the early 1920s, and cost a total of $120,000. It was replaced in 1961 for a cost of $700,000, and then again in 1999 for $12 million. Today, it’s the main traffic artery connecting this area of South Carolina with North Carolina, and the bridge carries 30,000 vehicles per day.
In terms of activities, there’s a lot on offer. While the area might have a population of under 10,000, there’s plenty to do. During the heat of summer, boating, swimming and skiing in the reservoir are the most popular activities, and waterfront activities like picnicking, hiking and camping are also enjoyed. Even during the cooler months of the year, waterfront diners do a brisk business (and you’ll find plenty of eateries, including T-Bones on the Lake).
If you’re considering relocating to the area, there are plenty of homes available, but one of the most impressive neighborhoods is River Hills.
About River Hills
River Hills, or River Hills Plantation, is a lakefront community and country club that offers residents access to the natural beauty of Lake Wylie/Clover, as well as everything that the greater Charlotte, NC, area has to offer. With almost 1,100 homes, it’s a large neighborhood, and the championship golf course is both beautiful and challenging.
One of the most unique aspects of River Hills is the landscaping. The entire neighborhood blends in with the area’s natural topography and flora, creating a serene, park-like environment. There’s even a private, blue-flag marina available for owners to enjoy, providing direct access to the lake.
Buyers will find quite a few different options here, from condominiums to cottages, and even large private estates on the lakeshore. There’s really something for everyone in River Hills, and throughout Lake Wylie. Find more information about River Hills here:
